본지는 박물학자,탐험가,군인,변호사,지리전문가,기술자,은행인 등 33명이 1888년 설립한 미국지리학회(National Geographic Society)의 학회지로 탄생 하였습니다. 미국지리학회는 비영리 과학,교육전문단체로서 그동안 4,000여 지구 탐험 프로젝트를 지원해 오고 있습니다, 지난 100년 간 5대양 6대주의 신비스러운 자연세계에 대한 탐험이 이러한 지원 프로젝트 하에 수행되었으며 그 탐험기록을 리얼하게 수록해온 잡지가 바로 National Geographic입니다.본 학회는 1899년 1,400명에 불과하던 회원이 1989년에는 1천70만에 이르렀으며 학회지인 National Geographic의 독자 수는 4천만명,회독률 평균 4.4명에 달하고 있습니다. 이 규모는 인쇄할 때마다 5천톤의 종이와 38만 5천 파운드의 잉크가 소요됨을 의미하며, 한호에서 소요되는 총 종이를 일렬로 연결하여 펼치면 지구에서 달까지 연결할 수 있을 정도의 거대한 양입니다.이러한 National Geographic는 지구 곳곳의 다양 하고 독특한 문화에 대한 이해를 돕고 모험심을 고취하는 인류 역사의 기념비적 잡지로 평가되고 있습니다.본지는 단순히 지리학적인 지식만을 다루는 것은 아니며 동시에 인종문제,특히 현 시대 인류의 당면과제라고 할 수 있는 환경 및 공해,핵문제 등 시사성이 강한 사회문제 등도 다루고 있습니다.또한 모든 내용들이 권위있는 사진작가들의 예술작품에 가까운 생생한 화보와 함께 전달되기 때문에 전문가는 물론 일반인이나 특히 호기심 많은 청소년들도 쉽고 흥미롭게 이해 할 수 있도록 구성되어 있습니다.
National Geographic, formerly the National Geographic Magazine, is the official journal of the National Geographic Society. It published its first issue in 1888, just nine months after the Society itself was founded. It is immediately identifiable by the characteristic yellow frame that surrounds its front cover. There are 12 monthly issues of the National Geographic per year, plus additional map supplements. On rare occasions, special editions are also issued. It contains articles about geography, popular science, history, culture, current events, and photography. The current Editor-in-Chief of the National Geographic Magazine is Chris Johns, who was named Editor of the Year in October 2008 by Advertising Age magazine at the American Magazine Conference. Society Executive Vice President and President of the Magazine Group John Q. Griffin, who also is Chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America, has overall responsibility for the English language magazines at the National Geographic Society. He reports to Tim Kelly, President, National Geographic Global Media. Terry B. Adamson, Executive Vice President of the Society and the Society's chief legal officer and heads governmental relations, has overall responsibility for the Society's international publications, including National Geographic Magazine. With a worldwide circulation in thirty-two language editions of nearly nine million, more than fifty million people receive the magazine every month.[citation needed] In May 2007, 2008, and 2010 National Geographic magazine won the American Society of Magazine Editors' General Excellence Award in the over two million circulation category. In 2010, National Geographic Magazine also received the top ASME awards for photojournalism and essay.
