[2014 07] Xi Jinping Visits Seoul

Xi Jinping Visits Seoul

I am convinced that his visit this time will become a crucial turning point on the journey that Korea and China will take over the next two decades as strategic cooperative partners. - President Park Geun-hye

Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived in Seoul on July 3 for a two-day state visit at the invitation of President Park Geun-hye. They had busy separate schedules following an official welcoming ceremony at Cheong Wa Dae upon arrival.

Immediately after the welcoming ceremony, Park and Xi had a one-on-one meeting and then an expanded meeting with their entourage. At the one-on-one talks, the two leaders discussed the North Korean nuclear issue, Parks Eurasia Initiative, a proposal for linking energy and logistics infrastructure across the continent, and Chinese fishermens illegal fishing in the West Sea.

At the expanded summit, the two leaders evaluated the current Korea-China relations and discussed issues of mutual interest, including the bilateral free trade agreement and the expansion of economic cooperation through trade and investment.

The two leaders agreed to launch a Korea-China young leaders forum with the aim of bolstering the foundation for future-oriented progress in bilateral relations through the enhancement of the network between next-generation leaders of the two nations. They also came to an agreement to work to flesh out the Korea-China youth exchange programs, which began in 2004, according to Cheong Wa Dae.

Then they attended a signing ceremony, where two agreements, including a consular agreement, were signed between the governments, and 10 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between relevant organizations, of the two countries. One of the MOUs is aimed at establishing a direct won-yuan exchange to eliminate the need to exchange either currency into American dollars when settling accounts.

Xis visit will serve as a clear message for denuclearization of North Korea, Park said in a joint press conference after the talks. Our two leaders share the view that we must realize North Koreas denuclearization and resolutely oppose another nuclear test.

Xi said Beijing supports improved inter-Korean relations and peace on the Korean Peninsula. He then urged North Korea to return to the negotiating table for nuclear disarmament talks without attaching any conditions, while saying, Relevant nations should steadily pursue the six-party process and hold bilateral and multilateral talks to coordinate and resolve mutual concerns.

On July 4, Xi visited National Assembly Speaker Chung Ui-hwa and gave a lecture at Seoul National University. Then, he and his wife attended a special luncheon prepared by Park at the Korea Furniture Museum in northern Seoul.

Following the luncheon, Park and Xi attended a business forum at the Shilla Hotel, with about 500 Korean and Chinese businesspeople and government officials. Isnt it also great when friends visit from distant places? Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Park Yong-man, the host of the forum, asked quoting this phrase from the Analects of Confucius, which Xi shared in his speech.

With Xis visit as momentum, China promised to loan a couple of pandas, the national symbol of China and a sign of a friendly diplomatic relationship, to Korea. Park said, The pandas will be loved by the Korean people as a symbol of the bilateral friendship. In the meantime, she accepted Xis invitation to visit China again in the future.
